This is our version of pancakes!! Yum yum!!! Hope you like.
Set up, set up, set up. This works wonders: Let get going
The ancient Greeks made pancakes called tagenias, with the earliest references in the works of Cratinus and Magnes. The Romans had their own version as well.
The Middle English word pancake appears in English in the 15th century. In other words pancakes are universal showing up in every continent with different versions!!!
Africa: In Ethiopia you got injera bread and lahoh in Somalia and Djibouti.
Asia: In Japan you have okonomiyaki and oyaki and of course cannot forget soufflé pancakes ( these babies are a doozy to make).
Europe: The kaiserschmarrn from Austria, blini from Russia, and Æbleskiver from Denmark.
So many choices!!!
Seeing as the pancake is all over the world. Can't exactly attribute it to one culture or country, and so story time will go Greek. You can bet we will be making pancakes form other cultures and exploring in the future!!! And with that off to the story we go. NO these pancakes are not the Greek version.
In ancient Greece, fables, myths, and legends were told orally by the traveling Greek storytellers during the Greek Dark Age. A slave Aesop is believed to have collected 600 of them and written them down. We know them today as Aesop's Fables. Bet you know one of them " The Tortoise and the Hare." But today we are going with:
A Slave name Androcles once fled form his master and ran into the forest. While there, he came by a lion that was roaring and moaning in pain. His first instinct was to run away, but when he realized the lion had not chased him he went back to check on it.
As he came closer, he realized that the lion was injured and had a thorn in his paw. And so, Androcles took out the thorn and bound the lion's paw. Soon the lion was able to stand and licked Androcles' hand like a dog. He then took Androcles to his came and there he brought meat for Androcles everyday to eat.
Soon after, Androcles and the lion were captured and Androcles was sentenced to death by lion. Finally the day arrived with the lion having not been fed for day.
The emperor and all the people gather in the arena to watch the death of Androcles, the gates of the lion cage were opened and out came the lion roaring and ready to strike! But as he came near he recognized Androcles and walked up and began to link his hand like before.
Amazed at this, the emperor called upon Androcles who proceeded to tell the story of he and the lion in the forest. At that the emperor pardoned and freed Androcles and the lion was released back into the forest.
Too short? I encourage you to look up Aesop's Fables. They are a wonderful read. You will be surprised how many of then you actually know. My little guy loved them when I read them to him. Which one is your favorite?
